"Girl Develop It" Helps Women Achieve Their Technology Goals

Women represented just 26 percent of professional computing occupations in the 2016 US workforce, according to the National Center for Women in Technology. Girl Develop It, a national, nonprofit organization, is helping women break into technology jobs like web and software development by offering events and meet-ups for women interested in technology careers.

The non-profit organization has chapters in 56 U.S. cities. Headquartered in New York, their goal is to teach women around the world from diverse backgrounds to learn software development. The organization was founded in 2010 as a call to action for women, by women who were tired of the low representation of women in technology, and wanted to make a difference.

Girl Develop It started with just one class that sold out in 24 hours. Now they have 55,000+ members nationwide. In the Rochester area alone, nearly 700 people have taken advantage of the organization's resources in its three years since the chapter opened. Rochester chapter co-leader Valentina Peric said they work "with people in their 20's through retirement, many of whom have decided they want a career change or to learn a new skill."

Introducing more women to web and software development will help push more females into technology jobs, thus helping to solve the disparity problem with women in technology.
