The Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce, along with Walker's Legacy, are launching a small-business funding event in October that will match entrepreneurs with capital. The event is part of a bigger initiative to create programming and reduce funding challenges for business women of color in Detroit.

The Michigan Black Chamber is Michigan’s first statewide Black chamber of commerce. The Chamber's Women of Color Entrepreneur Circle initiative focuses on establishing economic equity among women of color. Walker's Legacy is a national organization that works to promote the career advancement, skill sets and networks of women in business and women entrepreneurs. Together, these organizations will create programs that will assist Detroit area women of color.

In addition to the small business funding event, the group will launch an online accelerator program called Prospectus, a 9-week training program that includes legal and financing training and information on finding resources. The program is getting help from partners like Google Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Walker's Legacy

Walker’s Legacy was founded in 2009 and was named after Madam C. J. Walker, an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a political and social activist who also became the first female self-made millionaire in America.
